Newtown Savings Bank Pledges $35,000 to Bethel Public Library

Newtown Savings Bank recently pledged $35,000 to the Bethel Public Library’s Capital Campaign. The pledge will sponsor the Circulation Desk at the Library. Newtown Savings Bank, established in 1855, serves Bethel and the surrounding communities with thirteen branches including one downtown in Dolan Plaza and the other on Stony Hill Road (Route 6). John Trentacosta, President & CEO of Newtown Savings Bank commented, "As a long standing member of the Bethel community, having been in town since 1964, we are very pleased to donate to a cause that will benefit everyone in Bethel. When completed this Library will be a wonderful resource that will serve both families and businesses alike." Mr. Trentacosta also mentioned that he hopes the donation will inspire others to give to the Library.

This pledge is a milestone for the Campaign. By making this pledge of $35,000, Newtown Savings Bank pushes the amount raised to $2,113,000, bringing the total amount left to raise under $1 million. "This is a very generous gift and we are very happy to be working with Newtown Savings Bank. They are good neighbors of the Library," said Chairman, Shani Burke Specht. “We still need approximately $900,000, but this feels much more obtainable,” added Burke Specht.

In addition to the Capital Campaign, the Library Board of Directors and the Town of Bethel are celebrating the Centennial of the Library. The Signature Event of this year-long celebration was a Gala held on November 14, 2009 at the Stony Hill Inn.
