What better way to commemorate the 100th birthday of a library than with a book? Library Director Lynn Rosato has responded with this well-written and carefully researched work celebrating the Bethel Public Library's century of service to the community.

The (appropriately) 100-page book is a thoughtful reflection on the Library's past, and begins with its founding by Miss Maria Parloa, whose own story is surprising and fascinating.

The book is a well-balanced mix of text and illustrations that will appeal to readers and browsers alike. Vintage photographs, newspaper clippings, and images of the construction of the 2005 addition underscore the Library's amazing journey from a single room over a downtown store to a newly expanded building that houses a 105,000-volume collection!

Phineas T. Barnum was many things, "a newspaper editor, lottery agent, museum director, politician, and distinguished public benefactor." But he is perhaps known best as the greatest showman on earth! Born in Bethel, he is our town's most well known citizen.
